In the preface of the textbook, Chaffee describes his personal experience with philosophy, and explains why he believes this discipline is very important. He also discusses his goal in writing the textbook. In Chapter 1, Chaffee shares his reasons for studying philosophy. This tells us something about the author’s view on the value of philosophy. Chaffee also argues that philosophy can alter your life.

QUESTION: How does the author’s definition of philosophy connect with the value he sees in studying it? Do you agree or disagree with him? Explain.

Answer

Chaffe talks about the sound effects philosophy have had on his life. He argues that studying it will help one develop the critical thinking skills they use every day. Additionally, he claims that philosophy helps us comprehend how we connect with our loved ones and the environment. He also talks about how he used to skip the crucial step of considering many points of view. The motivation and knowledge we require to conquer life’s most difficult challenges may be found in philosophy. As stated in the book, philosophy is defined as the pursuit of love and knowledge; thus, it is essential to observe how this explanation connects to the definition (Chaffee, 2016). Chaffee’s justification for why we should study philosophy is to use intelligence to our advantage. Both of these discuss using your brain to find solutions to issues related to what I just mentioned. According to Chaffee’s description on page four, philosophy is used to develop more accurate models of human behavior, which is one of the reasons you should study it. He talks about how philosophy might help people produce better character qualities.

I concur with and support Chaffee’s reasons for choosing philosophy as a field of study. He is right, and I agree because it is important to consider other people’s perspectives. After all, you never know what you can learn that will completely change your way of life. Additionally, interactions allow us to modify our viewpoints. Critical thinking is equally important. One needs it to get by in life and to solve issues and studying philosophy might make you a more critical thinker who is more beneficial.
