Who Are You?

Read this brief essay by Chad Vance on the self – Personal Identity essay

QUESTION:  Which version of the self described in Vance’s article (body, soul, or psychology) do you think is the most accurate?  If you think there is a better interpretation, describe it.  Explain why you feel your idea makes more sense.

ANSWER

Something is holding up our world. In different ways, we each find our unique sources of vitality. The soul? I think that’s what it is, although I may be wrong. ‘Many people believe that what we are is not physical, but rather something ethereal,’ Chad Vance said. Others believe that we each possess a soul or are, in fact, souls and that these souls are immaterial entities that reside within our physical bodies. Because they are not made of matter, souls are invisible to the five senses. It appeared that he was making the case that souls are not what makes us human. Unfortunately, I must disagree. I recognize that we can’t see an individual soul, but I also know we need them to keep going. Without souls, we have no capacity for empathy or connection with other people. In addition, I think that the body is meaningless without the soul.

Since no two people can ever know the identical thing, it is not feasible that our existence can be explained by psychology. It had become routine for Vance to know as much as the Pope when he first opened his eyes. If you wanted to fool others into thinking you were them, you’d need to be a clone. You would be a better Pope imposter if you had his knowledge but not his trappings. However much you try to imitate or claim to be him, there can only be one real Pope. “Intuitively, the actual pope is the man who wakes up at the Vatican,” I agree with Chad Vance’s conclusion.

Meantime, your physical form is nothing more than a fake pope. Because everyone who pretends to know as much as someone else or to be someone else is lying, this is a very accurate statement. The real person gets up at home, eats delicious meals, and so forth. Every other person is just a fake or a lookalike.
