Question
Are We a Society of Sleepwalkers?
Chaffee writes:
“Socrates warned the citizens of Athens against ‘sleepwalking through life.’ Do you think citizens of our culture run a similar risk of ‘rushing through life’ without taking the time to reflect deeply on the meaning of life and the state of their souls?” (p.61)
QUESTION: Write a journal entry responding to Chaffee’s question.
ANSWER
Yes, sleepwalkers dominate our culture today. I make this argument because, from what I have observed, the majority of people in today’s society continually hurry through life without stopping to consider the purpose of life or the state of their souls. We appear to be always racing against the clock and juggling many goals at once, preventing us from stopping to consider or think about anything else.
In our fast-paced society, everyone is always seeking for answers. As we all want to live the American ideal while residing in the United States, things could become tricky. We seldom often get to spend time with our loved ones while contemplating the world around us. When it comes to making ends meet and saving money for future generations, we are juggling these two obligations. People nowadays have lost sight of what life is all about. They are always pressed for time to work, pay bills, or take care of other necessities. Most people struggle to comprehend the purpose of their own life because of the pressure to fulfill their basic requirements on a daily basis. Today’s workforce strives to complete tasks more quickly. They attempt to show off their speed and strength, but they don’t seem to know what they are there for. They have neglected their loved ones in their haste to make money and fulfill their everyday needs. Consider what it means for each of us to live the life that God has provided for us. We should all learn time management skills in order to protect our souls, spend time with our loved ones, and consider the world around us.
