How Do We Discover the Meaning of Life?
“Victor Frankl discovered that, even under the most inhumane of conditions, it is possible to have a meaningful life, defined by the ways we choose to respond to life’s challenges.” (Chaffee, p.36)
QUESTION: Do you agree with Frankl’s thinking? Why? Also discuss the picture of two men rescued from Auschwitz by the Allies (see page 36 of the textbook).
Answer
I would want to agree with Frankl. I take this step because I think that while harsh circumstances can make some people see the bright side, not everyone can. For instance, people who experienced rape or other forms of abuse as children are frequently impacted from the negative side. They frequently cannot alter how they feel, yet they nevertheless feel that way. It might lead to PTSD, as well as to hopelessness and worry among other types of mental health problems. Some people commonly decide to take their lives when they reflect on these incidents. Thus, it is important to note that not everyone can live satisfying lives.
A lot may be learned from the picture of the two individuals that were rescued. They first give off the impression that they have not been living a decent life since they are malnourished and thin. They were half dressed and wearing torn clothing that barely covered their lower bodies. This indicates that they have not gotten any new clothing in a while. Sadly, the man on the left cannot hold his wrap tightly enough to conceal his privates since it has been pulled. Fortunately, the man on the left is wearing both shoes, while the man on the right is shoeless and has one foot. Despite his flaws, the man on the right seems optimistic. Upon closer observation, one can see that his jaws are relaxed and his face is devoid of sadness. One can argue that although it has been challenging, he sees a glimmer of hope and light at the end of the tunnel.
