There are many theories in relation to motivation – Taylor’s scientific management, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Herzberg’s two factor motivation, McGregor’s Theory X and Y, Ouchi’s Theory Z, etc. Choose one theory from the textbook or lesson reading. Find an article in the Chamberlain library that applies that theory to nursing or healthcare in general. Discuss how the theory is still applicable to motivational situations in the workforce.

Theories of Motivation: Herzberg’s Two-Factor Motivation Theory

The two-factor theory of motivation was invented by Herzberg, which required that managers guarantee adequacy in hygiene factors to prevent employee dissatisfaction. At the same time, Herzberg stressed that managers make sure employees are n a work environment that is stimulating and rewarding for their motivation towards performing their tasks and work even harder and better.

Staff retention is often determined by job retention in most healthcare organizations. Therefore, job satisfaction gets entangled in motivational theories like Herzberg’s two-factor theory. In their study, Alrawahi et al. (2020) discuss how motivation influences job satisfaction in clinical laboratories. They describe job satisfaction as crucial to promoting fulfillment feelings in job settings, like promotions, salaries, and achievement of goals. Alrawahi et al. (2020) link Herberg’s theory to job satisfaction by outlining how motivation is the primary contributing factor. For instance, they state that among the findings, most participants mentioned that the absence of health and safety in the laboratories created job dissatisfaction.

Herzberg incorporates factors like responsibilities, challenging or stimulating recognition, and opportunities for advancements that are relevant to the current workforce. They contribute to intrinsic and extrinsic motivation among employees of an organization. With hygiene factors like working conditions and interpersonal relationships, Holmberg, Caro, and Sobis (2018) regard Herzberg’s theory as a conceptual model, especially for workers like nurses. For instance, mental nurses’ job satisfaction can be organized based on their job environment and how satisfied they feel in their work.

Considering how mental health in workplaces is rising, some aspects of Herberg’s theory can be used to analyze how motivation influences job satisfaction, which in turn impacts mental health. According to Holmberg, Caro, and Sobis (2018), the theory can instruct the type of intervention components that can have an effect on the long-term satisfaction and intrinsic motivation among members of an organization.
