Select two Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies that you believe will have the most impact on your future professional nursing practice. Why are these the most important ones for you?
Identify one AACN BSN Essential that will be most important in improving quality in your future nursing practice. Explain why you selected that essential and how your practice will be improved by its use.

ANSWER

Essentials and Competencies of Professional Nursing

The Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies that will impact my nursing practice the most are patient-centered care and evidence-based practice. Patient and family-centered care involve holistic care that considers the needs, values, and preferences of patients and their families. It recognizes the designee or client as a full partner in providing safe, effective, age and culturally appropriate, coordinated, and compassionate care. Evidence-based practice involves providing care using the most recent scientific evidence and clinical expertise while considering the patients’ values, experience, and preferences (Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies, n.d.). I believe that the two competencies are the most important since they will allow me to provide holistic care that is scientific-based while treating patients as people instead of following strictly stipulated guidelines that may not be suitable for all patients. The two competencies directly improve patient outcomes and experience.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing essential that will be most important in my future practice is Essential VIII: Professionalism and Nursing Values. Professional practice involves understanding the contemporary, legal, and historical contexts in nursing. Adhering to professionalism and professional values will enable me to apply the principles of altruism, ethics, accountability, communication, caring, excellence, and respect when working with other professionals to optimize health outcomes in communities, families, and individual patients (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008). I believe that the essential is the most important because it naturally leads to attaining all the other essentials. It will enable me to be accountable for myself and my practice and compel me to engage professionally and be ready for lifelong learning.
