QUESTION
Required Resources
Read/review the following resources for this activity:
- Textbook: Chapter 15
- Lesson: Week 1, 8
- Minimum of 1 scholarly source
Instructions
As we learned in Week 1, there is a difference between being educated and simply trained. The purpose of education is not only to determine what someone can do, but also what kind of person they become as a result of their education. Studies in the humanities will advance the communication skills, empathy, self-awareness, judgment, and professionalism of students, and they help students with becoming skilled at the social and cultural context of working with people.
In addition, studying the humanities can help students in the following ways:
- Literature can introduce students to life situations with which they may not be familiar.
- Drama can teach oral communication.
- Philosophy can teach skills of analysis and argument.
- Art, literature, drama. and music are expressions of human creativity, and taking part in some form of artistic activity, either as reader or viewer, is part of what makes us human.
For this assignment, choose a work of art that made an impression on you during this course. Then, address the following:
- Include an image of or link to the work.
- Identify the artist, the title, date completed, and the medium.
- Explain how learning about the work will help you in your life and career. Consider the context in which the work was created and the meaning of the work.
- Explain how one or more specific disciplines (literature, drama, philosophy, art, music) influenced you.
- Examine the effect that you think this class could have on your career and personal life.

ANSWER
Interrelationships Reflection
The pillar of fame is a poem by Robert Herrick in 1591-1674. The medium of this art is language. Herrick valued fame and wanted to become a famous poet. He hoped his fame would endure the same way pillars endure destruction (Martin &Jacobus, 2019, p.12). Typically, pillars support buildings and always remain standing even after the buildings are destroyed. Herrick wanted his fame to have the same endurance capacity as the pillars. The following is an image of Herrick’s poem: pillars of fame:
Impact of the Poem on Life and Career
I acquired analytical and creative thinking skills while learning about this work, and these skills will be invaluable in my career. Art appreciation often involves information processing, i.e., analyzing various perceptual features of the artwork, appraising, and meaning-making. For example, Herrick uses symbolism and imagery in the poem (Martin &Jacobus, 2019, p.12). I had to apply creative reflection and divergent thinking to comprehend the imagery and symbolism.
Divergent thinking requires one to use open-ended process to generate, process, and connect unrelated ideas (Osowiecka & Kolańczyk, 2018). You need to think outside the box to connect remote or unrelated ideas and elements. Because the poet blended abstract and concrete ideas and objects in the poem’s structure, this divergent significantly helped in meaning construction. It helped me connect two remote parts of the metaphor (the poem’s theme and vehicle) into a meaning expression. According to Osowiecka and Kolańczyk (2018), this divergent thinking is required in creative thinking and generation of creative ideas. I have learned how to detect similarities between unrelated concepts and connect them, and I can use these skills to solve problems in my career and personal life.
Herrick’s poem also taught me that one can use poetry to describe and communicate their emotions and vision. Herrick was passionate about fame and poems so, he expressed this passion through metaphorical statements. I always use journaling to relieve stress, but I learned that poetry is a venting channel than journaling. In one of the assignments, I used this poem as inspiration to create my own poem. I learned that one needs to find an object, image, or event that depicts the exact emotion they are feeling and then express themselves through that object. This objective correlation is useful in describing and getting a sense of your emotions. Also, poem writing is therapeutic in itself, and it can help you relieve stress. While writing my own poem, I discovered that the process is very immersive and I even lost track of time at some point.
How Art influenced me
Art has influenced by artistic creativity, a process that elevate moods and subjective well-being. I experienced transcendence feelings while engaging with visual art and literature (e.g., poems). Transcendence refers to a feeling whereby one detaches themselves from the concerns of everyday life and enters a state of harmonious enjoyment and contemplation. Art has also resulted in self-adjustment, i.e., a change in my worldview and cognitive abilities.
As mentioned earlier, engagement with metaphoric expression improved my creative and analytical thinking abilities. I have become more observant and better in grappling uncertainties. I can think broadly and entertain different possibilities before making a final interpretation. Drama changed my worldview and perspective of life by deepening my understanding of the complexities of human nature.
The Effect of this class on my Career and Personal Life
I think this class will positively affect my professionalism, communication skills, and judgment. Professionalism involves incorporating values such as respect, altruism, integrity, compassion, sense of duty, honor, accountability, etc. into practice (Bumgarner et al., 2007). This class provides the means of developing and sustaining this professionalism. We witnessed how characters in great literature dealt with various dilemmas in their stories. As we learn about these characters’ struggles, we empathize and sympathize with them, motivating us to take commitment and choice matters more seriously (Bumgarner et al., 2007). Furthermore, unprofessionalism often emanates from moral dilemmas and conflicts. Great literature equips us with stories we can reflect upon and remind us of societal values important to the profession.
The class will also improve my cultural competence. I learned that cultural constructs shape our understanding of the world and experiences. Interpreting art requires we step out of these constructs and look at the world from the other person’s perspective. This skill is helpful for culturally competent practice.
I also think this class will make me a skilled communicator. Communication encompasses active listening, intercultural communication, conflict resolution, interpersonal communication, etc (Shafiei, 2022). Drama and visual art activities aid in the development of active listening, oratory skills, literacy skills, and focused concentration and attention. Also, the ability to capture and captivate an audience is a dramatic art. Drama engages one’s oratory skills: you need voice articulation, extemporaneous speaking, and to master the art of persuasion to induce participative experiences from the audience (Shafiei, 2022). I can apply this oratory skills to hone their presentation and public speaking skills. I can use these skills while pitching ideas in team meetings or when attempting to garner support from a particular project.
