Required Resources

Read/review the following resources for this activity:

  • Textbook: Chapter 6
  • Lesson 2
  • Minimum of 1 scholarly source (in addition to the textbook)

Initial Post Instructions

This week you will read about architecture. The lesson includes information on Roman architecture, which was greatly influenced by the Greeks and Etruscans.

Locate at least two architectural works that were influenced by Greco-Roman architecture. These can be from any time period after the Greco-Roman period but should be from different periods themselves (e.g., one from Renaissance and one from Baroque). Then address the following:

  • What is the function of each structure?
  • How does each work exhibit influence of the Greco-Roman period? Is the influence specifically Greek, Etruscan, or Roman – or a combination?
  • How would you compare the two selected works? Take the role of the evaluative critic.

Use examples from the text, the lesson, and the library to help support your answer. Please remember to provide images and citations to help illustrate your points.

ANSWER

Influences of Ancient Architecture

Karlskirche

The building was constructed in memory of St. Carlo Borromeo, who was revered for caring for Plague victims. The building is used to hold various concerts in the region. Karlskirche

was inspired by the Greek and Roman architectural styles. The Greco-roman influences in the building are characterized by the columns and domes (Schürmann, 2017). \

Temple of Hera, Italy

The temple was constructed during the Doric order around 460–450 BC. The Doric order was characterized by ancient Greek architecture. The temple was used for religious purposes and was considered sacred among Greeks (Van-der-Stelt, n.d). The Doric columns on the extrinsic evidence of the Greco-Roman influences in this building. The building has six columns on the shorter side and 14 on the longer side. The column width and the interval between each column are small.

Evaluation

The Karlskirche is more visually appealing than the Temple of Hera I. The Karlskirche’s façade has more pictorial quality than the Temple of Hera 1. The elements that elicit a strong visual presence in the Temple of Hera include the curves on the columns and stucco finishing that resemble marble (Schürmann, 2017). However, Karlskirche has more visually-appealing elements. Each column on the building is completed with a crown and double-headed eagles. The broad fascia connects the façade along the horizontal axis, while the dome, in the middle of the fascia, is crowned by a lantern (Schürmann, 2017). The lanterns on the domes and columns are similar. The building’s color effects (the green and gold-plated leaf) also add to the building’s visual appeal.
