M05 Discussion: Which View of Reality Do You Most Agree With?

QUESTION:  Do your own ideas about reality most closely align with the thinking of Locke, Berkeley, Hume, Kant, or the feminist tradition?  Explain your answer.  Your initial post should demonstrate your understanding of the course concepts that you discuss.

ANSWER

To a large extent, I share John Locke’s view of the world. Personally, I think the only way to deal with the harsh realities of life is via direct exposure to them. As you mature, you begin to face the harsh realities of life. I know that when times were tough for me, I realized that life was not as great as I had imagined it to be when I was a kid. When I applied to universities but was refused because of my low grades, I knew I had made some bad decisions that would set me back on the path to success.

According to John Locke, at birth, we have no prior knowledge instead; we get what we know through sensory information. By this, I interpret John Locke to mean that he thinks it’s quite certain that everything that happens to us does, in fact, affect who we become. For the most part, I share this view; after all, you do get to know individuals from different walks of life, and their perspectives are always interesting to hear. I want to think of myself as someone who genuinely cares about others. Taking care of my disabled brother since I was five years old has had a profound effect on who I am now. After considering all of this, I have come to the conclusion that the many years I spent caring for another person were crucial in molding me into the kind, compassionate person that I am today. My personal experience has taught me all I know, just as John Locke said.
