Understanding Gender: Stereotypes, Roles, and Controversies

Anthropology Lecture Summary

The lecture has been very informative, as it has shed light on several contentious issues related to gender. Gender stereotypes, their source or origin, examples of gender stereotypes, and their effect in the society and the workplace have been discussed in depth. Through the lecture, a better understanding of gender-based stereotypes and how they negatively affect people has been achieved. Issues related to gender stereotypes, such as gender-based discrimination in the workplace have also been discussed. The lecture also involved an in-depth discussion of the sources of stereotypes, including the division of roles and duties in society and theories developed from the evolution theory.

The roles and rituals topic involved a study of the various rites and rituals that people from different cultures perform in their day to day life (Burton, 2001). Differences in the initiation rites and rituals of various communities and societies were discussed. While the topic and the selected readings were informative and entertaining, some of the rituals that different communities perform during initiation, and the beliefs that they have were shocking and unbelievable. It is important to appreciate different cultures and understand the importance of culture to people. Through the evaluation of the various beliefs and rituals that communities participate in, one can understand why different roles are assigned to people of different gender in society.

The hierarchies and stereotypes topics were also very illuminating and enjoyable. During the topic, various stereotypes based on gender were identified and discussed. The video and discussion on pronouns used to refer to different people were entertaining and informative, especially since the issue is a current issue in the world. The discussion on society’s view on gender being binary or “black and white” was one of the most heated discussions, as people had different opinions on the issue (Petersen & Hyde, 2011). Gender diversity, sexual orientation, and gender identity are some of the most controversial issues across the world, and the topic provided insights into the issues.

Sexuality and gender conformity were discussed, and several readings were provided to further elaborate on the issues. The response assignments were designed to make sure that students grasped the various topics and issues discussed in the lecture. I was able to engage with the various topics discussed, including gender conformity, sexuality, gender stereotypes, and gender stereotypes. These issues are current in the modern world and discussing them with peers was a great way of understanding them better. The materials (videos and readings) that were provided for the lecture contained a lot of information on the various issues discussed and provided different views on them.

The topic on consent, power, and pleasure involved discussions on the various theories that attempt to explain gender differences, politics and pleasure, and the Kinsey movie that attempts to shed light on issues such as masturbation and reproduction. The evolutionary psychology, social cognitive learning, and social structural theories were discussed and their differences identified. The Kinsey movie brought to light various myths and beliefs about sex and issues such as masturbation and reproduction. Lastly, the topic of partnerships, reproduction, and identities provided information on issues such as virginity, roles, and heterosexual partnerships (Pedulla & Thébaud, 2015). Through the discussions on these topics, a better understanding of various current issues was acquired.
