The Impact of Technology on Society: Advancements, Inequalities, and the Dual Nature of Change

Technology impacts the society in various ways. Looking at the social influences of technology on society, it is evident that changes in technology result in changes in the society, to accommodate the technological advancements. For instance, the industrial revolution led to the advancement of industries, businesses, and technology, with many people abandoning farming to participate in the new ventures. However, technological advancement is not shared equally in the society. Individuals who are well-off have access to the best and latest technology, with this advantage helping them better their lives even further. People who enjoy wealth and power continue acquiring more wealth and are at the forefront of technological innovation. Advances in technology, therefore, result in a larger economic divide in the society. Employees and the not-so-well-off individuals are regarded as the property of the rich people.

Leaders of corporations and businessmen put in large amounts of money into technology and hope that their investment will solve the problems their businesses face, and ease operations. Advanced technology continuously eases industrial processes, and companies continue to lay off more workers and employ machines with greater output and lesser costs of operation. Technology, therefore, results in the segregation of the poor, and loss of employment for many individuals in the society.

My inclination is that technology breeds both positive and negative changes in the society. Effects such as increased literacy levels, access to better education, access to information from the internet, access to machines and products such as mobile phones that ease communication all work towards the betterment of society. They improve the society in a great way. You cannot ignore the positive impact that technology has had on the improvement of security in any society. However, there are also a few ways in which technological advancement has caused negative effects on our society. For instance, it has resulted in laziness, as many people are depending on technology and machines to perform tasks they were previously involved in, for them. Others even engage in immoral behavior and crimes such as stealing using technology (cybercrime, etc.). The positives of technology, however, out way the negatives.
