Leaders use systems-based practice to empower other nurses. Considering your current or former clinical setting, share how you will use principles of systems-based practice to grow in your role as a leader in nursing. Include a scholarly outside source to support your answer.

ANSWER

Systems-Based Practice

Systems-based practice is an approach to healthcare delivery where the healthcare workers endeavor to provide optimal care by being aware and responsive to the larger system and context of healthcare and being able to call on other system resources effectively. As a nurse leader, I will need to understand the system well and be an active team member. At the same time, I make decisions based on the system’s priorities, limitations, and available resources. To understand the system well, I will need to demonstrate knowledge of private organizations and the public structure, regulation and financing of the practice, advocacy for disease prevention and health promotion, the involved costs, and different patient insurances. The knowledge will be invaluable for me as a nurse leader because it will help me to make balanced decisions between system goals and patient needs.

Applying systems-based practice in nursing leadership will allow me to practice cost-effective healthcare while delivering services within the constraints and protocols of the system. I will be able to effectively play a role in a team of healthcare facilitators from different professions. I will communicate more effectively and professionally with colleagues and other practitioners. System-based practice will also enable me to collaborate and coordinate inter-professional teams. I will be in a position to advise and train other medical personnel on the correct use of resources and discuss insurance plans with patients.

Systems-based practice will further enable me to advocate for health at the system level. I will act on behalf of the patient to ensure that follow-ups are conducted correctly, patients go through the complexities of the system, patients know the available treatment plans, and the patients’ wishes are effectively transmitted. I will also act on behalf of the population by increasing public awareness on issues such as unhealthy lifestyles and environments and disease prevention. I will also be in a position to take part in system evaluation, feedback, and change (Yazdani et al., 2016).
