ANSWER
An Article Review of Eliason and Johansson’s (2020) Research Article on The Disengagement Process among Young Athletes
Disengagement in youth athletes is a process as many research bodies aim to approach the issue through various analyses. However, based on the previous studies and the findings in the article, the disengagement process is mainly influenced by the coach’s ability to create a sports environment considered beautiful, the support the youth athletes receive from their friends, teammates, parents, and siblings, and how the representatives design the sports program. The central gap is the type of research carried out in the previous pieces of literature, which is less of theory and more of exploration.
Eliason and Johansson’s (2020) research article attempts to inquire into the disengagement process among youth athletes when they are withdrawing from the sport. Their new research aims to provide another point of view different from the previous studies that have only engaged in exploratory perspectives than theory. They, therefore, include aspects such as organizational changes and the common changes in the youth’s lives, especially the changes in normative cultural and personal expectations. Analyzing disengagement as a process has helped them expose the interplaying factors that cause the changes. Nonetheless, the emotional state of the young athletes seems to play a more significant role in the process.
I agree with the majority of the points discussed herein by Eliason and Johansson (2020). Athletics is more of teamwork, even when the athletes participate in individual sports. Therefore, they tend to care for their teams and themselves and end up not playing for fun when their mates are doing well, and they are not. Coaches and representatives will also influence how the young athletes feel based on the number of rewards for their efforts. They are likely to quit if they think they are not appreciated enough. Either way, their emotional attachment and interaction with the rest will influence how much longer they can hold onto the sport.
In conclusion, the emotional state and influence of the coaches, representatives, family, friends, and siblings contribute to the more extended stay in the sport. If these groups do not put in an effort to motivate and encourage the young athletes, they might be disconnected from the sporting activities sooner than expected.
