The US Conference of Mayors, a nonpartisan organization representing cities with populations of 30,000 or more, has determined that the mental health crisis is a pressing issue facing American cities. The report is based on a survey of mayors from 117 cities in 39 states.
According to a recent survey conducted among mayors from various cities across the United States, 97% of respondents reported an increase in requests for mental health services in their respective cities over the past two years. However, a staggering 88% of these mayors acknowledged a lack of resources to adequately address the crisis. The participating cities included prominent locations such as Chicago, Seattle, Montgomery (Alabama), and Atlanta. The survey revealed that substance abuse was identified as the primary cause for the rising mental health problems, as reported by 85% of cities, followed by factors like Covid-19, homelessness, and economic concerns. Substance use disorders were cited as the most prevalent mental and behavioral health issues in 65% of cities, followed by homelessness resulting from mental illness in 56% of cities. Other challenges highlighted in the survey encompassed shortages of mental and behavioral health workers, including school counselors, as well as limited access to behavioral health services. Among youth, depression was identified as the leading primary mental health problem by 89% of cities, with over 43% noting that teen suicide is a significant concern. (Yee 2023)
