QUESTION
Interview Project Instructions
Transcribe (I already upload the transcribes with the project, please copy and paste the transcribes with the report, no need to change anything with the transcribes)your interviews verbatim – that is, word for word. You do not need to include any social chitchat at the beginning or end of the interview – unless, of course, it is relevant to the topic. Include your transcript in your interview report. Because transcription is such a time-consuming process, you do not need to transcribe all three of your interviews. However, you should listen multiple times to the two that you do not transcribe and take notes on their content.
Code and Analyze Your Data: Do open coding of your interviews. What themes do you notice? Choose at least three themes to focus on. Create and define codes that capture these themes. Then do focused coding of all three interviews. What patterns do you notice? What can you conclude about your research question based on these data?
Write Your Report: Your report should include the following sections:
- Introduction: What is your research topic? What research question did you choose, and why is it interesting?
- Methods: Describe the method you used to answer your research questions (This is of course obvious, but a good research report includes a description of the methods used.) Explain how the interview guide was developed and tested, who your research participants were, how they were recruited, how (when, where, how long) the interviews were conducted, and how you analyzed your data. You should also include the text of your interview guide.
- Results: What themes emerged during your open coding of the interviews? What codes did you use during your focused coding? What were the key results from your analysis? Incorporate some quotes from your interviews that support your findings.
- Conclusions: Remind your reader of your research question, and then summarize your findings. What do you conclude about your research question? What was the interview experience like? How good were your questions, in retrospect? Is there anything you would do differently next time, or can you suggest any directions for future research?
- Include the transcription of one interview as part of your report.

ANSWER
Interview Project Report
Introduction
For the interview project, my research topic was the effect of alcohol on its user. The research question was “How does alcohol affect sleep?”, and the interviews for data collection were conducted using questions that sought to find out how using alcohol had affected the sleep patterns of users. It is interesting to understand how alcohol affects the sleep patterns of its users in order to understand its effect on the health of users. Sleep is important for the health and physiology of the human body. It is, therefore, important to understand the effect of alcohol on sleep behavior.
Methods
In order to answer the research question, interviews were conducted to collect relevant information. The interview guide was first developed, using questions that were structured to engage the interviewees and enable them to provide the necessary information for the answering of the research question. The participants of the research were all students of UO and were randomly selected based on whether they use alcoholic drinks. Each interview took about ten minutes and the participants were cooperative. Data were then analyzed to identify significant themes. The interview guide was made up of the following questions:
- When did you first drink alcoholic drinks?
- How do you like alcoholic drinks?
- (If you like to drink,) what time do you think is the best to drink during a day?
- Tell me a time about what happened when you really get drunk?
- After getting drunk, do you always feel sleepy or energetic?
- Have you ever felt that alcohol affect your sleep quality, either in a good way or a bad way?
Results
Three major themes emerged during the open coding of the interviews:
- Alcohol usage starts at a young age: “that was when I was 15, I was in high school” and “When I was 17”.
- Alcohol makes its users sleepy: “Alcohol makes me sleepy and fall asleep faster than before” and “I fall asleep faster”.
- Alcohol is an evening affair: “Absolutely evening or night” and “Evening. Parties are all in evenings or nights”.
Conclusion
From the information obtained from the interviews, it is safe to conclude that alcohol makes its users sleep more. However, one participant complained of poor sleep quality. The interview experience was great, and I got to interact with students. The interview project was fruitful and I would have enjoyed conducting more interviews.
Interview Transcription: Lays Li
AH: Hi, it is nice to do an interview here with you, please introduce yourself.
LL: Hi, it’s my pleasure. I’m Anyu Li, and a current UO student. I’m graduating soon.
AH: Oh, good for you. So today I am going to do an interview on How does alcohol affect your sleep. My intention of this interview is to get to know if alcohol really affects your sleep, and also this is my school project, I have to do that though.
LL: Haha, yeah.
AH: So, when do you first drink alcoholic drinks?
LL: Well, that was when I was 15, I was in high school, and a couple of friends of mine asked me out for dinner, you know when people are young, they always want to grow up and do some grownup thing. We bought some beers, and we try to get drunk. That was fun, Haha.
AH: Well, that was cute, I had a similar experience also. And how do you like alcoholic drinks?
LL: I love wine and cocktails, but I just hate the smell of hard liquor, I always want to throw up after smelling the hard liquors. Beer is fine, but I’m just afraid of getting fat.
AH: Okay, and what time do you think is best during the day?
LL: Absolutely evening or night.
AH: Tell me about a time of what happened when you really get drunk?
LL: When I was a sophomore, I broke up with my girlfriend, and I was really hurt, my friends asked out to a bar, and we drank a lot. I just keep drinking and saying that she was a bitch. And then it was too late, my friend sent me home, but on the way home, I threw up in the taxi, my friend paid for that. Hahaha, that was super awkward.
AH: After getting drunk, do you always feel sleepy or energetic?
LL: Sleepy.
AH: Have you ever feel that alcohol affect your sleep quality, in a good way or a bad way?
LL: Yes, after drinking, although I get tired soon, I don’t really fall into a deep sleep. I feel hot and thirsty and sometimes I feel bad with my stomach.
AH: So, you are saying although you feel sleepy, your sleep quality is not good as when you don’t drink, right?
LL: Yes.
AH: Alright! Thanks for doing the interview with me, it is nice to talk to you!
LL: No problem.
