Importance of Logistics in Disaster Management

Synopsis

The process of gathering information for my capstone research project has been exciting and challenging in equal measure. Finding relevant literature on the issue of humanitarian logistics has been fruitful, as I have been able to find a number of books on disaster management and several reports on the management of past disasters, including the tsunami and the Haitian earthquake. I am still working on the literature review section of the research paper, going through the various journals, newspaper articles, and books that have published on the issues of humanitarian logistics and disaster management. Several authors seem to agree that humanitarian logistics play a crucial role in ensuring the success of the disaster management process and the provision of humanitarian aid/relief when disasters strike. The authors explain how disaster management is made efficient and effective only through the proper coordination between the various groups of people who are tasked with different roles in the management, collectively referred to as disaster logistics providers.

The task of compiling information from different information sources has been quite challenging, owing to the fact that there is a lot of information provided by different authors on the issue of humanitarian logistics. The main task has been to summarize lengthy chapters on the role that humanitarian logistics play into short and precise paragraphs that contain the main points derived from a particular information source. I have successfully selected the various information sources that I will use in the development of my research paper, and I am in the process of completing the review of relevant literature for the final research paper. I feel a bit behind time since I was expecting to have completed the literature review by this week, but I plan on setting aside more time for research and writing, to ensure that I complete my research on time. The guidelines/feedback from assignment 3 and 4 have been very helpful in the development of my research paper, and I look forward to completing it within the specified time.
