QUESTION
Project: Heathers
Heather Graham owns a department store called Heathers. Heathers is an upscaled department store located in downtown Chicago. The store has specialty departments for women, men, children, cosmetics, cologne, linen, furniture and housewares. Heathers has a finely trained workforce. Heathers believes in rewarding its staff for hard work. Each employee is paid a regular hourly wage plus commission. The commission is only paid if the employee meets or exceeds his or her sales quota. The sales quota is based on the title of the employee and is set per hour. Sales representatives are classified as either part-time or full-time. Part-time employees are either sales assistants (PT1) or sales partners. (PT2). Full-time representatives are either assistant managers (AM), sales consultants (S2) or sales associates (S1). Part-time representatives work up to 20 hours a week. Full-time representatives work between 30 and 40 hours a week. There is no overtime work. Sales representatives have a say in how many hours they work per day. Sales representatives are ranked and paid according to their experience and tenure. The employee is paid commission for exceeding the required total weekly sales quota. The required total weekly sales quota is the hourly sales quota times the number of hours worked. Commission is only paid on sales amounts exceeding the required total weekly sales quota.
The first worksheet will contain the calculations for determining an employee’s weekly pay. The second work sheet will contain all the information that needs to be looked up. The worksheet already in the workbook contains the test data.
The first worksheet will allow Heather to input the name of the employee, department, title code, hours worked and the number of sales for the time worked. This work sheet will then reference the second worksheet which will have all the information about the position. Heather wants the look up information on a different sheet for easy updating and referencing.
The second worksheet will contain the following information:
| Title Code | Description | Hourly Rate | Hourly Sales Quota | Commission Rate |
| AM | Assistant Manager | 20.00 | 200 | .03 |
| PT1 | Sales Assistant | 8.50 | 100 | .015 |
| PT2 | Sales Partner | 9.00 | 150 | .010 |
| S1 | Sales Associate | 10.50 | 175 | .02 |
| S2 | Sales Consultant | 12.00 | 200 | .025 |
Format all dollar amounts to currency
The first worksheet must calculate the employee’s gross pay and net pay. Deductions for taxes and state/federal programs. You will need to research the necessary tax and deduction values.
You are responsible testing the worksheets using the data found in Heathers.xlsx. You will add the two worksheets detailed in this project to that workbook. You will provide an executive summary and oral presentation to Heather Graham.
ANSWER
Enhancing Payroll Management at Heathers: A Comprehensive Worksheet Solution
Introduction
Heathers, an upscale department store located in downtown Chicago, is looking to optimize its payroll management system for its finely trained workforce. The current system involves paying employees a regular hourly wage plus commission based on sales quotas. To streamline this process and ensure accurate compensation, this project proposes two new worksheets to be added to the Heathers.xlsx workbook. The first worksheet will calculate employees’ gross pay and net pay, while the second worksheet will provide essential information on title codes, hourly rates, sales quotas, and commission rates.
Worksheet 1: Payroll Calculator
The first worksheet will allow Heather to input relevant employee data, including the name, department, title code, hours worked, and number of sales for the time worked. The worksheet will then reference data from the second worksheet to calculate the employee’s gross pay and net pay. The calculations will be based on the hourly rates, sales quotas, and commission rates associated with the employee’s title code.
Additionally, the worksheet will factor in deductions for taxes and state/federal programs to calculate the net pay accurately. To ensure compliance with tax laws, the necessary tax rates and deduction values will be thoroughly researched and implemented in the calculations. All dollar amounts will be formatted to currency for clarity and ease of understanding.
Worksheet 2: Employee Information and Title Codes
The second worksheet will contain comprehensive information related to title codes and their corresponding descriptions, hourly rates, hourly sales quotas, and commission rates. This data will be presented in a user-friendly format for easy updating and referencing by Heather and her team. By maintaining this information on a separate sheet, Heather can quickly make changes and ensure that the payroll calculations remain accurate and up-to-date.
Testing and Implementation
To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed worksheets, rigorous testing will be conducted using the test data provided in the Heathers.xlsx workbook. All calculations will be thoroughly validated, and any potential errors or discrepancies will be addressed promptly.
Executive Summary and Presentation
Upon successful implementation and testing, a comprehensive executive summary will be prepared to provide an overview of the project, its objectives, methodologies, and outcomes. The executive summary will highlight the benefits of the new payroll management system in terms of accuracy, efficiency, and improved employee satisfaction.
An oral presentation will be delivered to Heather Graham, where the proposed worksheets’ functionality and benefits will be showcased. The presentation will emphasize the enhanced payroll management system’s potential to save time, reduce errors, and improve financial transparency at Heathers.
Conclusion
The addition of the two new worksheets to the Heathers.xlsx workbook will revolutionize the payroll management system at Heathers department store. The calculations for determining employees’ weekly pay will be accurate, and deductions for taxes and state/federal programs will be taken into account, ensuring fair compensation. The second worksheet will provide all essential information regarding title codes and associated rates for easy updating and referencing. By implementing this comprehensive solution, Heathers can streamline its payroll process, improve financial accuracy, and enhance employee satisfaction, ultimately contributing to the store’s overall success.
