QUESTION

Soil contamination

Does the use of Chlorpyrifos have an adverse effect on the pH of soil? and does it  increase groundwater acidity?

ANSWER

The world population has been increasing rapidly and will continue to increase. this increase has put a massive amount of pressure on the existing agricultural system. Therefore, Pesticides have now become an integral part of our modern life and that increased crop production, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, fertilizers, and soil modification. This study will focus on Chlorpyrifos which is one of the most widely used of spectrum insecticide, a chemical used to in agricultural insect control products.

This research project will investigate the potential impacts of Chlorpyrifos on the soil pH.  the purpose behind this research is discover if Chlorpyrifos changes soil pH and to discover if that would impact groundwater acidity. In addition, this research will investigate if those changes are threating drinking water resources.

To test the impacts of repeated use of Chlorpyrifos there will be 8 soil samples with different pHs collected. Chlorpyrifos will be used in the collected soil for more than 14 years as well as newly treated soil samples.  The samples will be analyzed by high-pressure liquid chromatography with appropriate standards to determine the levels of each compound.

Hypothesis of this research are repeated use of Chlorpyrifos leads to a change in soil pH and groundwater also other accumulation of soil problems. The types of primary sources that I plan on using are research papers, articles, journals and, books
