Community & Disaster Preparedness (Solved)

QUESTION

Discussion Question

Think about disasters your community has or could potentially face. Now, think about how your community is helping its members prepare.

  1. Explore your community and find an advertisement that represents helping community members be prepared for a disaster.
    • Examples could be a billboard, poster at a bus stop, marquee sign, flyer, yard sign and more. Example: Sign advertising ‘free’ flu vaccinations at a local pharmacy.
  2. Upload that picture into the discussion.
    • To have it display in your post:
      1. Click the embed image (looks like a picture of a mountain),
      2. Choose upload image from the drop down arrow
      3. Click on the Upload Image (rocket ship) icon
      4. Click on the image you want to display
      5. Choose Open
      6. Click Submit
  3. Describe the message the advertisement is conveying.
    • Describe how the message impact preparedness.
  4. If you cannot find any advertisement in your community, describe a type of advertisement for disaster preparedness you think would be most beneficial to your community and how it would be best conveyed.
  5. Next, identify one community setting that is impacted by the disaster advertisement you shared
    1. Settings:
      • Correctional facilities
      • Home health
      • Schools
      • Forensic areas
      • Hospice
      • Faith communities
      • Occupational health
  6. Analyze at least one nursing role (refer to Week 6 lesson) related to disaster preparedness in that setting. Example: In the school setting, what actions and interventions would be involved with the nurse as coordinator of disaster preparedness?
  7. Identify at least one key stakeholder related to the setting that a CHN could collaborate with regarding disaster preparedness. Include why this collaboration is important.

Your discussion post should look like:

  • Uploaded picture
  • Paragraph one: Describe the message the advertisement is conveying and how the message impact preparedness.
  • Paragraph two: Identify one community setting that is impacted by the disaster advertisement you shared. Analyze at least one nursing role related to disaster preparedness in that setting.
  • Paragraph three: Identify at least one key stakeholder related to the setting that a CHN could collaborate with regarding disaster preparedness. Include why this collaboration is important.
  • Resources: Where did you find your data?

ANSWER

Advertisement Message

This infographic contains information on how to plan for a 7-10 days long emergency. For example, the advertisement indicates that the amount of water required during an emergency is one gallon per day, per person. Therefore, a family of four would need four gallons of water per day. Other supplies include non-perishable foods, flashlights, extra batteries, radio, pet supplies, etc. Locals can use this infographic to plan for their family’s and pets’ safety and needs during an emergency.

Community Setting

Home health is a care system where skilled practitioners deliver a spectrum of services at the patients’ homes, including personal care and caregiving services. Typically, most home-health patients are older patients, people living with disabilities, or people with limited functional and psychological capacities. Families or informal caregivers of these patients may overlook these populations’ needs while planning for an emergency, underscoring the importance of home-health nurses’ input.

Daugherty et al. (2012) reported that most home health agencies have limited disaster plans and capabilities. They lack oversight and capabilities to prepare their clients for disaster, raising concerns for clients’ safety. One of the nurse’s roles in this setting is to help these agencies lay out a detailed and standardized disaster preparedness plan for their clients. They can train the home-health staff on how to conduct risk assessments and develop individualized plans for their clients.

Key Stakeholder

A CHN can collaborate with the primary informal caregiver of the patient to enhance the patient’s preparedness. A primary informal caregiver is any individual, outside medical staff, who provides unpaid care to the patient and oversees their treatment and recovery. Involving the informal caregiver is essential because they might be the first responders during an emergency. Therefore, they must be involved in developing the client’s disaster preparedness plan to enhance patients’ health outcomes. Also, they can provide the care team with valuable information about the patient’s preferences, especially in activities of daily life. The care team can use this information to optimize the patient’s functioning during an emergency.
