QUESTION
After reading the Cleveland Fitness Centre case, consider the project scope.
Start by drafting a simple scope statement. Everyone’s scope statements might be relatively similar (but you should be explicit about your assumptions about the scope; if the scopes vary significantly, that’s a good opportunity for follow-up discussion).
Then, explore the scope within the context of the project.
What do you see as the objectives? Be explicit about the stated and inferred objectives. Discuss in what ways the scope addresses the project’s objectives. Do you think all of the work – including the renovation of the mezzanine offices, changing rooms, and showers – should have been included in this project. Why or why not? Is there other work that should have been included? How else might the objectives have been met?
Given the project’s objectives and the scope, how would you measure success?
ANSWER
A Case Study on Cleveland Fitness Centre: Project Scope
This project involves improving the existing Cleveland Fitness Centre situated on the city’s outskirts by renovating the existing facility and acquiring new fittings and equipment. The renovation will consist of site clearing to expand changing rooms and showers and install air conditioners. The renovation will also include acquiring electrical fittings and new gym equipment. At the same time, the project will involve a software developer in developing the necessary computer software program (Parker, and Downie, 2014).
Given the scope within the context of the project, the overall objective for the renovations and improvements was to increase the number of customers and the revenue stream. The inferred objectives are using the expanded facilities as a competing factor. For instance, the expansion of changing rooms and showers, and air-conditioning are anticipated to improve the welfare of future gym users, who are projected to increase after the renovation. Moreover, the owners aimed to take advantage of the increasing demand for gym business to build a loyal clientele. Still, the project aims to achieve comprehensive coverage through the software development program.
Through aspects of the project, like developing a software program, the scope addresses the project objectives, particularly the increasing number of objectives. People now look at hygiene, aeration of the facility, and the general outlook of the gym. Therefore, given the overall objective, renovation of mezzanine offices, changing rooms, and showers should have been included in this project as they are part of improving the well-being of the gym users and stand out from the competition.
Considering the whole idea was to address the increasing demand and also increase revenue, they should have considered adding other services relevant to the gym. For instance, they could have added a space for personal training concerns for interested parties. Otherwise, the idea was to ensure the facility accommodates the new customer base resulting from the increased demand.
Given the objective to meet the increasing demand for gym services, online personal training sessions and flexible memberships would have ensured all consumers’ needs are met. The business’s success is measured if the objectives are met (Kleinaltenkamp et al., 2020). For instance, if the objective was to increase memberships and they increased by 20 percent, then it would be a positive change. However, success is determined f the exact goals and objectives were met and exceeded.
