QUESTION
Purpose
This week’s graded topics relate to the following Course Outcomes (COs).
- CO 1: Examine the sources of evidence that contribute to professional nursing practice. (PO 7)
- CO 2: Apply research principles to the interpretation of the content of published research studies. (POs 4 & 8)
- CO 4: Evaluate published nursing research for credibility and significance related to evidence-based practice. (POs 4 & 8)
- CO 5: Recognize the role of research findings in evidence-based practice. (POs 7 & 8)
Due Date
- During the assigned week (Sunday the start of the assigned week through Sunday the end of the assigned week):
- Posts in the discussion at least two times, and
- Posts in the discussion on two different days
Directions
- Discussions are designed to promote dialogue between faculty and students, and students and their peers. In discussions students:
- Demonstrate understanding of concepts for the week
- Integrate outside scholarly sources when required
- Engage in meaningful dialogue with classmates and/or instructor
- Express opinions clearly and logically, in a professional manner
- Use the rubric on this page as you compose your answers.
- Best Practices include:
- Participation early in the week is encouraged to stimulate meaningful discussion among classmates and instructor.
- Enter the discussion often during the week to read and learn from posts.
- Select different classmates for your reply each week.
Discussion Questions
Application and implications for practice come from the interpretation of meaning from research findings. Communicating and using research evidence is an expectation of a BSN graduate.
- Select and describe one of the Discussions or Conclusions from the required article from the Week 6 assignment that you found interesting and applicable to practice. Describe how you would apply the evidence to improve nursing practice. Explain your answer.
- Discuss ways you would disseminate research-based evidence; how would you share with your peers? Include your thoughts on why it is important for you to be involved in communicating and applying nursing research evidence.
ANSWER
Applying and Sharing Evidence
One of the conclusions made in the article is that depressive symptoms are common among female gynecologic patients. The depressive symptoms manifest as worry, anxiety, sadness, fatigue, and loss of interest. This information provides the rationale for conducting routine psychological screenings among gynecologic cancer patients (O’Connor et al., 2017). Thus, I can request routine psychological assessments of these patients using the recommended DT/PL assessment tools (O’Connor et al., 2017). Ideally, these routine assessments will prompt patient referrals to relevant professionals to treat the co-existing emotional problems, enhancing patients’ quality of life.
The dissemination process starts with documenting and reporting the research findings without judgment or opinion. The documentation involves presenting the data in graphic formats, e.g., tables, charts, and graphs, or narrative formats, e.g., issue or policy briefs. The audience’s characteristics will influence the dissemination strategy and determine which channel to use (Ashcraft et al., 2020). The dissemination channels include emails, one-on-one meetings, video calls, seminars, workshops, webinars, etc. Alternatively, one can create and distribute the evidence through printed materials materials, such as flyers, leaflets, pamphlets, infographics, guides, etc., to relevant stakeholders or share the information on the organization’s social media platforms or website (Ashcraft et al., 2020). Engaging opinion leaders, change leaders, consultants, and experts in the dissemination process are paramount.
Disseminating research evidence is important because it enhances awareness, attracts stakeholder support and funding, and allows nurses to share best practices with their peers. Individuals interpret data differently; hence, my involvement in disseminating the results is essential to help highlight the value of the new findings. I can help stakeholders interpret, reframe, and recodify new knowledge from the research findings. This knowledge transfer of research evidence is crucial because it facilitates practice change that may enhance patient and nursing outcomes.
